¡º For skeptics the affirmation that the Bible is God's Word is an astounding claim. Is it possible, they ask, that the Creator of the universe if such there be, designed to communicate to us humans not only through Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, but also through a written revelation?

This is no new question. Throughout the centuries Christians have responded to the skeptics' question by answering with a resounding yes. For the over whelming majority of Christians have affirmed that the Bible is an authoritative communication from God which speaks of Christ. Its human authors wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells its readers the truth about critically important matters of faith and practice; it also communicates truthfully when it touches upon matters related to history and the natural world. The Bible is an infallible book. God, the author of truth, is its ultimate author. The Holy Spirit confirms in the heart of believers that the Bible is indeed the Word of God.

Even during the early days of the Church unbelievers attempted to subvert the Christian faith by alleging that errors existed within the Bible. For this reason the ever astute Augustine wrote The Harmony of the Gospels to demonstrate that the Gospel writers did not contradict each other:

And in order to carry out this design to a successful conclusion, we must prove that the writers in question do not stand in any antagonism to each other. For those adversaries are in the habit of adducing this as the palmary allegation in all their vain objections, namely that the evangelists are not in harmony with each other.

Augustine understood that attacks on the Bible's infallibility were sometimes launched to throw disrepute on the Christian faith itself.

Although the veracity of the Bible had come under strong attack during the eighteenth century Enlightenment in France and England, it was especially in the nineteenth century, with the advent of virulent forms of higher criticism of the Bible and the propagation of naturalistic theories evolution, that a number of scholars in universities and seminaries in Europe and the United States challenged not only the truthfulness of the Bible but also the truth claims of the Christian religion. These scholars were advocates of outright naturalism with its corollary atheism.. They wanted to treat the Bible as any other portion of ancient literature.

Taking a different tack than that of atheists, Protestant Liberals as represented by Adolf Von Harnack in Germany and Harry Emerson Fosdick in the United States did not deny God's existence. But they did deny the deity of Christ, His Virgin Birth, the Trinity, the sinfulness of humankind, Christ's substitutionary atonement and the Bible's infallibility. In response to these challenges large numbers of Christians known as Fundamentalists or Evangelicals in the United States and as Evangelicals in England engaged Protestant Liberals in particularly fierce debate.

Less noticed were those "progressive" Christians of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century who wanted to hold onto the "essential" doctrines of Christianity, but at the same sought to define the Bible's authority in such a way that they could also accept the alleged truths of evolution and higher criticism. These Christians began to define the Bible's infallibility by saying that it was truthful for matters of faith and practice but that it could have errors regarding issues of science and history.

A number of historians and theologians who were committed to this approach wrote histories dealing with biblical authority in which they attempted to argue that the "central tradition" of the Church had been to say that the Bible was infallible for faith and practice(religious matters) but it could include errors in relation to matters of science and history. They also claimed that the Bible itself taught this view of its own authority.

Among more recent American writers belonging in this school of thought are Professors Jack Rogers and George Marsden. They associated the doctrine of the Bible's truthfulness for matters of faith and practice and science and history with the term inerrancy. Much like Samuel and Charles Briggs in the nineteenth century, they argued that the doctrine of complete biblical infallibility/inerrancy was a late theological innovation. It could therefore be jettioned with impunity as a doctrinal aberration.

Professors J. I. Packer, Kenneth Kantzer and D. A. Carson have argued that on the contrary the doctrine of the Bible's truthfulness in matters of faith and practice and science and history is not only a teaching of Scripture itself but represents the witness of the Church throughout the centuries. Indeed, Augustine, John Calvin, and the English Puritans and the nineteenth century Presbyterians at Princeton Seminary like Charles Hodge and B. B. Warfield all upheld this doctrine. These scholars understood only too well the significance of Augustine's warning that unbelievers have consistently attempted to exploit alleged errors in the text of Holy Scriptures as the justification for overthrowing the Christian faith itself. More importantly, they argued that the doctrine reflects the Bible's teaching about its own authority.

The present volume written by Dr. Yongkyu Park is a very important contribution to this continuing debate. Dr. Yongkyu Park demonstrates in a doctrine fashion that from the very beginning the Korean Presbyterian churches upheld the Christian doctrine that the Bible is the infallible Word of God. By this Korean believers meant that the Bible is truthful when it addresses matters of faith and practice as well as history and science. This stance of the Korean Presbyterian churches places them squarely within the central tradition of Christian history and is in accord with the teaching of the Bible about its own authority

What a personal delight it is for me to see the publication of this significant book! It could go along way to rectify some false impressions that have entered into scholarly works about the alleged late fundamentalist intrusion of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy into Presbyterian theology in Korea. As Dr. Park demonstrates, the reality is that the earliest Presbyterians and others believed that the Bible was completely infallible. The doctrine of complete biblical infallibility was no late theological innovation in Korean Christianity.

Dr. Yongkyu Park pursued a doctrine in historical theology at Trinity Evangelical Division School, Deerfield, Illinois, U.S.A. Along with Dr. Kenneth S. Kantzer, I served as a reader for his doctrinal dissertation which has become the basis of this present volume. Combining remarkable diligence with great intelligence, Dr. Park crafted a study which was admired by his professors. Moreover, Dr. Park's gracious Christian spirit was evident to all of his American colleagues during his studies at Trinity. I count him personally a dear friend in Christ. He is a choice servant of the Lord. His work should make an excellent contribution to the spiritual health of the Presbyterian Churches in Korea. ¡»
